Time’s Person Of The Year 2011

Is there a global tipping point for frustration? Everywhere, it seems, people said they’d had enough! From the Arab Spring to the Occupy Wall Street movement, “The Protester” was named Time’s Person of the Year 2011. Time magazine define the Person of the Year as someone who, for better or for worse, influences the events of the year. According to Time, it is recognition, not an honour, and goes to the person or group the magazine believes most influenced events of the past year. On Time’s website, a banner announcing the “Person of the Year” says: “In 2011, protesters didn’t just voice their complaints; they changed the world.”

Time’s Person Of The Year 2010

Time magazine has named Facebook co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg as Time’s Person of the Year 2010. At only 26 years old, Mark Zuckerberg becomes the youngest person to win this award since US pilot Charles Lindbergh in 1927. In 2003, Mark Zuckerberg was a 19-year-old Harvard University student who began an “an online directory” that connected “people through social networks at colleges”. A mere 7 years later, he has built a social and monetary empire, and has gone to become one of the youngest billionaires in the world, estimated to be worth US$6.9 billion.

Time’s Person Of The Year 2009

Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, beat out several contenders, including Steve Jobs, Stanley McChrystal and Nancy Pelosi, for the Time‘s Person of the Year 2009 designation. The selection puts the mild-mannered Ben Bernanke, a former professor, in the company of U.S. President Barack Obama, Pope John Paul II and Russian President Vladimir Putin, among other prominent world figures the magazine has picked in past years.
