Venice Film Festival 2011

The 68th Annual Venice Film Festival, which began from 31st AUG 2011 came to a close with the Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening, 10th SEPT 2011. Asia put in a strong showing in this year’s affair. Hong Kong actress, Deanie Yip won Best Actress Award through her stellar performance in A Simple Life by portrayed a lonely elderly woman with extremely accurate. China’s People Mountain People Sea helped director Cai Shangjun won the Silver Lion in best direction. Meanwhile the Best Actor Award went to Michael Fassbender, who played a New York man struggling with sexual obsession in Shame.

64th Festival De Cannes

The official Jury of 64th Festival de Cannes, which commenced since 11th MAY, had revealed the prizes winners during the closing ceremony on Sunday, 22th MAY 2011 at Grand Theatre Lumiere. American director Terrence Malick took home the top honor this year for his ambitious work “The Tree of Life”, which starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in a far-flung story of family life that plays out against a cosmic backdrop, including glorious visuals of the creation of the universe and the era of dinosaurs.

61st Berlin International Film Festival

Iranian director, Asghar Farhadi was the center of attention at the closing ceremony of this year’s 61st Berlin International Film Festival with his film ”Nader and Simin, a Separation” swept multiple categories by taking the Golden Bear for Best Film, with Best Actor and Actress prizes split among the films’ ensemble male and female cast, which included the director’s teenage daughter, Sarina. The film tells about an enlightening look at class, gender and religious issues in Iran, set within a globally accessible story of a disintegrating marriage complicated by an elderly parent and hopeful children.

Venice Film Festival 2010

One of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world, the 67th Venice Film Festival kicked off this year since 1st SEPT and ran through to 11th SEPT 2010 with Quentin Tarantino enlisted as president of the jury. Sofia Coppola followed in her father’s footsteps by winning a Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival by collected the top trophy with ”Somewhere”, a drama about a Hollywood star who realizes how empty his life is after reconnecting with his 11-year-old daughter.

Cannes Film Festival 2010

The 63rd Cannes Film Festival had been concluded on last Saturday, 23rd MAY at Cote d’Azur in South of France. A challenging Thai art film – Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, directed by an acclaimed international auteur, Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the top prize – Palme d’Or this year.

34th Hong Kong International Film Festival

The 34th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will run from 21st MAR until 6th APR this year. HKIFF is Hong Kong’s largest cultural event with screening over 250 titles from more than 50 countries in 11 major cultural venues across the territory. A total of 804 film projects, in which 602 are feature films, are submitted online from 69 countries representing more than double the number of submissions from the previous year at 365 from 50 countries. Increased submissions are seen primarily from North and South America, Europe and Australia.

60th Berlin International Film Festival

Every February, the city of Berlin bask in the glamour and glitz as it hosts the International Film Festival, called “Berlinale“. This year, the Berlinale celebrated its 60th anniversary and took place from 11th to 21th FEB. Chinese director Wang Quan-An’s “Apart Together”, story of the bittersweet reunion of a couple divided for decades across the Taiwan Strait, won the Silver Bear for the Best Screenplay.
