Commemorated since 1973, every 5th JUN each year is World Environment Day (WED). It’s one of the principal vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition on the week that 5th JUN is on. This year’s event will celebrate the incredible diversity of life on Earth as part of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity under the theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”.
Today is World No Tobacco Day. It’s been held on 31st MAY each year since 1989, which first resoluted by World Health Organization (WHO). World No Tobacco Day is a day for raise awareness in regards to the negative health effects that tobacco use can cause. The day is observed on a global scale with the theme “Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women” for this year, focusing on the tobacco industry and the way in which they target women and kids in their advertising.
24 Hour KL has returned this year with the theme of “Travelling Feet”. Just as the title suggest, photographs that have shots of shoes, bare feet or whatever to do with all things travel and feet around Kuala Lumpur (KL) areas are welcomed and pictures with good use of imagination or creativity will be showcasing on a slideshow that will be projected on large screen during Urbanscapes 24 Hour KL exhibition.
World Hypertension Day (WHD) is dedicated on 17th MAY every year. It’s initiated by World Hypertension League (WHL) and first launched on 2005 in order to increase the awareness of high blood pressure. This was especially important because of the lack of appropriate knowledge among hypertensive patients. The theme for WHD 2010 is “Healthy Weight – Healthy Blood Pressure”.
Reporters Without Borders recently had issued its eighth annual world Press Freedom Index which reflects press freedom violations that took place between 1st SEPT 2008 and 31st AUG 2009. Reporters Without Borders compiles the index every year on the basis of questionnaires that are completed by hundreds of journalists and media experts around the world.
After a successful run last year, Kuala Lumpur Design Week (KLDW) is going to return for its second edition with new logo, new mission, new line-ups and new objectives this year. It’s already started from 1st MAY and held until 16th MAY. The theme for this year’s event is “20/10″, which symbolizes 20 showcases in 10 locations. Twenty international designer superstars are going hand-in-hand with ten Malaysian masters and also twenty designs discourse at ten exhibitions during KLDW 2010.
Earth Day is held worldwide annually on 22nd APR each year, although there are some people celebrate Earth Day around the time of the vernal equinox. Named Earth Day, it has remained a time to celebrate restoration and stand up for the planet. Earth Hour 2010, an event calls on the world to switch off their lights for one hour, is return on this Saturday, 27th MAR. Although criticised by some, Eath Hour still served as a global call to every individual, every business and every community for stand up to show leadership and be responsible for the future of the planet Earth.
The second Thursday of MAR in every year is celebrated as World Kidney Day, which is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations. This year, this international day fall on 11th MAR, that is today. The objective of this day is to raise global awareness about kidneys, focusing on the importance of kidneys, reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.
On 8th MAR 1908 in New York, there were a group of socialist women organized a demonstration of 15,000 to demand pay rises, shorter work hours, the vote and an end to child labour. International Women’s Day (IWD) was founded in the following year, a century ago. Until this year IWD reach a milestone as it marks its 100th anniversary.
