Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank), the country’s largest lender, targets 30,000 card members to sign up for its newly-launched Maybankard Manchester United Credit Card over the next 12 months, sees the introduction of this co-branded card as a platform to strengthen its credit card business in the Asean region. The new card offers multiple Maybankard TreatsPoints, discounts when buying Manchester United merchandise online and at the Megastore in Old Traffod, and 20% off the Stadium Museum Tour at Old Trafford. The bank has also waived the card’s annual fee for life.

Distinction for property developments in Malaysia has no other name than that of the FIABCI Malaysia Property Award, the annual awards define the gold standard for building projects not just nationally but all over the world. The Quill Group of Companies and UEM Land Berhad were the big winners at the FIABCI Malaysia Property Award 2011 organised by the Malaysian chapter of FIABCI, the international real estate federation, on last Saturday night, 15th OCT 2011 at One World Hotel, Bandar Utama. Forbes has compiled a list of latest ranking for the World’s Billionaires earlier this month and this 25th year of tracking global wealth breaks two records: 1,210 listees in total and achieve a combined wealth of US$4.5 trillion. Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helu stays still on top of the list this year by added US$20.5 billion to his fortune, more than any other billionaire. The telecom mogul, who gets 62% of his fortune from America Movil, is now worth US$74 billion and has pulled far ahead of his two closest rivals: Bill Gates at second place and Warren Buffett at third, both added a more modest US$3 billion to their piles and are now worth us$56 billion and us$50 billion respectively.

Last week Forbes had released their latest edition of Malaysia’s 40 Richest. Robert Kuok and Ananda Krishnan stay still at top two spots with the net worth of US$12.5 billion and US$9.5 billion respectively. Overall Malaysia’s economy grew 7.2% last year, which recorded as the highest rate since 2000. The fortunes of the country’s 40 richest have kept rising too, which worth a collective US$62.1 billion, US$11.1 billion more than previous year.

The local business magazine, Malaysian Business has recently compiled a list of “Highest Paid Directors” survey for the year of 2009. Among the list, Genting Berhad topped the list with a payout of RM92.11 million. Besides, Genting Bhd also had the highest remuneration band of RM87.6 million to RM87.65 million for a single director. However, the company did not name the director. The top executive listed is its executive chairman and chief executive officer, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

Forbes had compiled a latest Global 2000 list last week. The Forbes Global 2000 are the biggest, most powerful listed companies in the world. It’s a comprehensive report analyzes the world’s biggest companies and the best performing of these titans over the past year. Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, tops Forbes list of “World’s Most Powerful Billionaires”. Meanwhile media and banking titan Silvio Berlusconi, also prime minister of Italy, ranks second on the list. Billionaire industrial heir, Saad Hariri, who was appointed prime minister of Lebanon last JUN ranks fifth. Rounding out the top five are Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim and Russian oil magnate Vagit Alekperov. Hong Kong and East Asia wealthiest man, Li Ka-Shing ranks eight in the list.

US banking giant Citigroup Inc becomes the seventh foreign company to grant a stockbroking licence from The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). However, it will be focusing its business model on foreign and domestic institutional business. Any variations to the business model are subject to the SC’s approval.

Based on Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) statement, the international reserves of BNM as at 31st DEC 2009 amounted to RM331.3 billion (equivalent to USD96.7 billion). Compared to 15th DEC 2009, the international reserves had declined RM3.8 billion but in term of USD it had increased USD0.5 billion. This indicates the strengthening of RM against USD.

Public Bank Bhd and Bursa Malaysia Bhd won the Overall Excellence Award of the Malaysian Corporate Governance Index 2009 (MCG Index) for their achievements in practising the highest level of corporate governance standard. The new MCG Index serve as a premier index for investors to gauge corporate governance levels of public-listed companies in Malaysia.
