20th MTV Movie Awards

The 20th Annual MTV Movie Awards had been held on Sunday, 5th JUN 2011 at Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City Walk, California. This year’s gala got off to a hilarious and celeb-studded start with host Jason Sudeikis spoofing “The Hangover Part II”. The Twilight Saga continue their reign from last year with their vampires overpowered the magical kids from Harry Potter franchise by taking home five golden popcorn prizes.

64th Festival De Cannes

The official Jury of 64th Festival de Cannes, which commenced since 11th MAY, had revealed the prizes winners during the closing ceremony on Sunday, 22th MAY 2011 at Grand Theatre Lumiere. American director Terrence Malick took home the top honor this year for his ambitious work “The Tree of Life”, which starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in a far-flung story of family life that plays out against a cosmic backdrop, including glorious visuals of the creation of the universe and the era of dinosaurs.

30th Hong Kong Film Awards

The 30th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards had been held recently on last Sunday, 17th APR 2011. Director Tsui Hark’s “Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame” walked away as the biggest winner by taking home 6 awards out of 13 nominations. The movie, wich tell about a murder mystery set during the reign of the first woman emperor in China, pocketed awards for Best Director, Best Actress for Carina Lau, Best Art, Best Costume and Make-up Design, Best Sound Design and Best Visual Effects. However, the coveted Best Film gong went to producer-actor Lam Ka Tung’s “Gallants”.

2011 PFA Awards

Tottenham Hotspurs’ winger Gareth Bale has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year. The 21-year-old beat six other players to the vaunted award and becomes the fourth Welshman to be honoured, after Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs. On the other hand, the Young Player of the Year award claimed by Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere. The 19-year-old has attracted plaudits from fans and pundits alike for his performances this season, in which he has established himself as a key player for England.

83rd Academy Awards

“The King’s Speech” garnered a total of four Oscar at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards ceremony, held at Kodak Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday night (27th FEB 2011), with Tom Hooper taking Best Picture and Best Director, Colin Firth grabbed Best Actor, and David Seidler, a boyhood stutterer himself, winning for Best Original Screenplay. “The King’s Speech” had led the nominations with twelve and eclipsed its biggest rival for the major awards “The Social Network”, the Hollywood blockbuster about the founding of Facebook.

61st Berlin International Film Festival

Iranian director, Asghar Farhadi was the center of attention at the closing ceremony of this year’s 61st Berlin International Film Festival with his film ”Nader and Simin, a Separation” swept multiple categories by taking the Golden Bear for Best Film, with Best Actor and Actress prizes split among the films’ ensemble male and female cast, which included the director’s teenage daughter, Sarina. The film tells about an enlightening look at class, gender and religious issues in Iran, set within a globally accessible story of a disintegrating marriage complicated by an elderly parent and hopeful children.

53rd Grammy Awards

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards had just been successfully took place in Los Angeles at Staples Center on Sunday, 13th FEB 2011 started from 8PM. This year, the night seemed to belong to all-American country-pop act, Lady Antebellum which walked away with three trophies. However, the biggest shock came when the critically-lauded Arcade Fire took home the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year for The Suburbs, the group’s third full-length album, besting sets by Lady Antebellum, Eminem, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

68th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Another golden dates was wrote down in the Golden Globe winners history as the coveted 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, precursor to the Oscar Academy Awards, had been presented to the much deserving winners on last Sunday, 16th JAN 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, Carlifornia. This year’s ceremony was hosted by Ricky Gervais, the British comedian and creator of The Office. Colin Firth won Best Actor for The King’s Speech at the 2011 Golden Globe awards, while Natalie Portman triumphed for her role in Black Swan and The Social Network picked up four awards.

One of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world, the 67th Venice Film Festival kicked off this year since 1st SEPT and ran through to 11th SEPT 2010 with Quentin Tarantino enlisted as president of the jury. Sofia Coppola followed in her father’s footsteps by winning a Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival by collected the top trophy with ”Somewhere”, a drama about a Hollywood star who realizes how empty his life is after reconnecting with his 11-year-old daughter.
