Time magazine has named Facebook co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg as Time’s Person of the Year 2010. At only 26 years old, Mark Zuckerberg becomes the youngest person to win this award since US pilot Charles Lindbergh in 1927. In 2003, Mark Zuckerberg was a 19-year-old Harvard University student who began an “an online directory” that connected “people through social networks at colleges”. A mere 7 years later, he has built a social and monetary empire, and has gone to become one of the youngest billionaires in the world, estimated to be worth US$6.9 billion.

In 2010, Zuckerberg’s accomplishments in 2010 are truly outstanding: he cemented Facebook’s status as the biggest social network and one of the hottest Internet companies by surging past 500 million users and began competing head-to-head with Google for Web domination, accounted for 1 in every 4 pageviews in the US. The story behind its success has already become the stuff of legend. He’s one of the world’s youngest billionaires, and recently he pledged to give the majority of his wealth to charity.

Time explains that for connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is Time’s 2010 Person of the Year.

Meanwhile, the conservative Tea Party political movement was second choice of the magazine’s editors and correspondents, followed by Julian Assange, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the 33 trapped Chilean miners. Meanwhile in the readers’ poll, more than 382,000 favoured naming Mr Assange as Person of the Year, ahead of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan and pop star Lady Gaga. Mark Zuckerberg only made tenth place in the poll, garnering less than 20,000 votes.

The Person of the Year (formerly Man of the Year) title is awarded by Time magazine’s editors to the figure deemed to have had the most influence on world events that year – not necessarily in a positive way. Both Hitler and Stalin have won in the past and in recent years, the title has gone to less controversial figures. In 2009 US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke won it, while US President Barack Obama won it the year before. The annual feature has been a fixture since the 1920s, with the winner appearing on the front cover of Time.

US banking giant Citigroup Inc becomes the seventh foreign company to grant a stockbroking licence from The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). However, it will be focusing its business model on foreign and domestic institutional business. Any variations to the business model are subject to the SC’s approval.

Citi was expected to play an important role in increasing the flow of funds from the Middle East as it has a strong presence in the Gulf. This licence approval underlines Citi’s continued investment in Asia and its desire to play an expanded role in the local Malaysian capital market.

In granting the approval, the SC had considered, amongst others, the scope of operations that will be established by Citigroup in Malaysia, their stockbroking and capital market experience, expertise, geographical presence and commitment to the Malaysian capital market.

The licence is one of the three stockbroking licences that were available for leading foreign firms under the Budget 2008 measures to strengthen Malaysia’s capital market and encourage greater intermediation of investment flows between the Middle East and Malaysia. Japan’s top brokerage, Nomura Holdings, received the first in SEPT 2009.

There are total of 34 approved brokers in Malaysia and with the latest addition of Citigroup the number will increase to 35. You can check for details of the list of brokers in Malaysia at HERE.
