29th Hong Kong Film Awards

Bodyguards and Assassins dominated the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) last night, 18th APR by sweeping a total of eight awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and five awards in movie technical categories. The movie is an 1906 action thriller about a scrappy team of volunteers who shepherd revolutionary Sun YatSen to a key meeting with his allies at Hong Kong, fending off scores of assassins dispatched by the China empress.

The Hong Kong Film Awards are recognized as the most prestigious film awards in Hong Kong, as well as among the most respected in mainland China and Taiwan. It recognizes achievement in all aspects of filmmaking, such as directing, screenwriting, acting and cinematography. They are given annually to Hong Kong films which are not shorter than an hour and commercially released in Hong Kong within the previous calendar year.

This year, organizers observed a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the massive earthquake in China’s western Qinghai province last week. Also, there are a group of young boys paid tribute to late kung fu star Bruce Lee ahead of what would have been his 70th birthday on 27th NOV by donning his trademark yellow jumpsuit and performing with nunchakus, two-stick weapons he popularized in the West.
