World Cancer Day

February 2nd, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. World Cancer Day is marked on 4th FEB each year to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment. World Health Organization (WHO) supports International Union Against Cancer (UICC) on this day to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer.

Recurring themes over the years focus on preventing cancer and raising the quality of life for cancer patients. This year’s theme, “Cancer can be prevented too”, focusses on how the risk of developing cancer can significantly be reduced through simple measures related to tobacco use, alcohol consumption, sun exposure, healthy weight and protection against cancer-causing infections.

The Charter of Paris chose 4th FEB each year as World Cancer Day and UICC initiated the World Cancer Campaign in 2005 in response to the Charter of Paris of 2000. Since 2006, UICC has coordinated World Cancer Day activities, supported by members, partners, WHO and other international bodies.

There are different symbols that are used to help promote the fight against different types of cancers. For example, the pink ribbon is a global symbol of breast cancer awareness, while the orange ribbon is associated with child cancer awareness.
